Heart–Warming Stories Of Life–Saving Care
There are many stories to tell about changed lives and second chances that began
at The Heart & Vascular Center at St. Helena Hospital. Here are just a few:

What Started Out as Heartburn Turned Out to be a Heart Attack:
“My heart just blew out one day,” says Jim Goertzen, a trim, fit, 56-year-old.
“You can’t tell anything by looking.” Jim and his wife went out for Thai food
one night last August. Afterwards, he got a terrific case of “heartburn.” His
“heartburn” continued for three days – no arm numbness, no nausea, and no
reason to think about a heart problem.

Mark Terrell
“Both of my parents died in their 50s of heart problems. I had been gaining
weight, and my two beautiful daughters looked at me and said, ‘Dad! Do
something!’ I mentioned this to a friend and his response was, ‘Gosh, guys our age are dying – you
should get checked out!’ And so I did.”

Life is No Longer Controlled by an Addiction:
Doug Roberts was a two-pack a day smoker for 26 years. Doug tried
everything, including hypnosis, to stop smoking. After going through the
tobacco dependence program at St. Helena's Center for Health, he not only
kicked his habit, he was so grateful he donated $100,000 to the Center to
help others stop smoking! |

The
Afterlife of Debra Miller:
Debra Miller, a 36-year-old marathon runner and a new bride, collapsed with
a pulmonary embolism on the first day of her honeymoon in the Napa Valley.
With no vital signs, she was rushed to St. Helena Hospital's Emergency Care
Center, diagnosed, and underwent life-saving surgery. Today a healthy Debra
is continuing her law career and is the new mother of two baby girls! |

Super
Glue for the Heart and Another Chance at Life:
St. Helena Hospital's Cardiac Center was a lifesaver for two men who were
flown in by helicopter for emergency surgery on separate occasions in 2003.
Mark Shuey and James Shawgo were each diagnosed with serious cardiac
conditions at Ukiah Valley Medical Center and transported to the Joseph
Phelps Vineyards Heliport at St. Helena Hospital.
